Noah Webster’s American Dictionary of the English Language was first published on April 14, 1828. Webster devoted himself to education and lifelong learning, and all of us are better for it. He didn’t hide his knowledge. Rather, in the spirit of Luke 11:33, he “lit a lamp and put it on a lamp-stand, that those who come in may see the light.” To what degree do you think about your ongoing education? What are you reading right now? What new things are you learning this week?
Webster entered Yale when he was roughly sixteen years old. Upon his graduation in 1789, he embarked on a career in education which would guide him for the rest of his life. Generations of young Americans learned the spelling and definitions of their words from this great scholar. Yet, he was also an educator’s educator and his works helped teachers to teach better. In 1886, the below picture titled, “Noah Webster, The Schoolmaster of the Republic, was published honoring him as the foremost educator in American history.
In celebrating the schoolmaster of America, Hebrews 4:12 comes to mind. “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Unlike any other book. The Bible reads you while you are reading it. The Word of God is alive and we come alive when we connect to its power. It has a way of revealing things about us that no other book can do. Read God’s Word and you will learn how to define a godly life. Remain in God’s Word and the Holy Spirit will help you to live a godly life. Rest in God’s Word and you will find that all of God’s promises are “yes” and “amen.” There is no education more important than learning God’s Word for life!
God before government,
